Since making his professional debut with the Arizona Opera in 1985, Antonio Nagore has risen to become one of America’s most exciting tenors. He possesses a voice described as “the legato of Gedda, his power of Domingo” (American Record Guide: September/October 1995). He commands a repertoire of well over over 40 roles, includes Don José in Carmen, Werther in Werther, Hoffmann in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Rodolfo in La Bohéme, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Calaf in Turandot, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, Pollione in Norma, and Radames in Aida.
He received his Master’s Degree in Music Performance from the University of Arizona, where he also studied composition and conducting. He also has been a finalist in the San Francisco Opera Merola Auditions.
A consummate recitalist, Mr. Nagore has sung in concert and oratorio with many orchestras in the United States and Europe, including the Tucson Symphony, Riverside Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony & Opera, Kalamazoo Symphony, Netherlands Pilharmonic, Orcestra Sinfonica Siciliana, Ulster Orchestra, Dutch Radio Orchestra (TROS), Trondheim Symphony, and Radio France Orchestra.
In all, Mr. Nagore has performed with over 60 opera houses, orchestras, and symphonies across North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East.
In his appearances for the 2010 - 2011 Season, Mr. Nagore began the season performing in the Sonoma City Opera’s production of I Pagliacci in the eponymous role of Canio. Next, he appeared with Martinez Opera Contra Costa, he engaged in two performances, “A Night at the Opera” charity concert, as well as a second concert event later in the season, featuring George Bizet’s Carmen in its entirety in the role of Don José. His next engagements were to cover the roles of Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and the title character in Cyrano de Bergerac with San Francisco Opera. He won great praise in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona when he performed Calaf, one of his many signature roles, in the Arizona Opera production of Turandot. Next, he travelled across the country to Shreveport Opera to perform in its production of Tosca as the painter Cavaradossi. On last minute notice he once again sang the role of Calaf in Turandot, making his debut with Pittsburgh Opera, marking a return of Puccini’s final opera to that venue after a 10-year hiatus. Mr. Nagore’s final appearance for the season was a gala concert for Fresno Grand Opera entitled “Puccini and Pasta”.
A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mr. Nagore continues to create greater inroads as a world-class American tenor. During the 2011 - 2012 Season, Mr. Nagore is scheduled to appear in the San Francisco Opera’s production of Turandot, as well as Carmen at Sarasota Opera, with other productions still in negotiations.
Ever committed to preserving the tradition of music and preparing the next generation of musicians for their own fulfilling and successful careers, Mr. Nagore keeps a very active private voice studio in his home in Antioch, California and in Fresno, California with many talented local-area professionals and up-and-coming singer/actors.
Historical Biography
Tenor Antonio Nagore, of Tucson, Arizona, was influenced at an early age by the beauty of the human voice. With guidance from his father, himself a tenor, he began singing as a member of local church and school choirs, and occasionally as a concert soloist.
In 1981, Mr. Nagore earned a Bachelor’s degree in Theory and Composition with minors in voice and conducting from the University of Arizona School of Music under Mr. Jerold Siena (voice), Dr. Robert Muczynski (composition), and Dr. Robert Pritchard (conducting). For his stage debut, he performed the role of Don Basilio in the U of A Opera Theater production of Le Nozze di Figaro.
After graduation, he became Music Director at SS. Peter and Paul Church and taught music classes at the Church’s elementary school while conducting the choir. He also gave private singing lessons in a small voice studio.
After five years as Music Director, Mr. Nagore returned to the U of A to earn his Master’s in Voice Performance. While there, he starred in 12 productions, including Alfredo (La Traviata), Don José (Carmen), and Nemorino (L’elisir d’Amore).
While pursuing his Master’s, Mr. Nagore came to the attention of then-Arizona Opera Executive Director Glynn Ross, who began casting him in small roles. While there, he gained valuable experience and critical acclaim for his work in such operas as L’Elisir d’Amore and Lakmé before moving to New York City in 1992.
Since his professional debut, he has performed more than 30 different roles with over 60 opera houses, orchestras, and symphonies across North America, the Middle East, and Europe. He also has earned a reputation for filling in on a moments notice in 20 productions in 28 years, including Lakmé and L’elisir d’Amore (Arizona Opera), Tosca and La Traviata (Den Norske Opera), Il Trovatore (Oper Frankfurt am Main and Opera Australia), Tosca (Covent Garden), his international debut in La Bohéme (Bath City Opera), and Turandot (Pittsburgh Opera).
